With more than 25 years of program/project management and development, community relations, marketing, event management and fundraising expertise, Sylvia Nelson Jordan is the visionary Manager of Academic Competitions for the Chicago Public Schools. Prior to this role, Sylvia served as a Senior Project Manager in the offices of the CEO and Chief Education Office.
In her everyday work, Sylvia engages and impacts more than 50, 000 students through in school and out of school time programs and various educational driven events. These dynamic options provide academic extra-curricular enrichment that leads to increased graduation rates, preparation for and exposure to posts-secondary options, scholarships opportunities and the world of work.
Prior to joining the CPS, Sylvia worked for the City of Chicago in various capacities including CAPS, Officeof Tourism as well as Scheduler for the former Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Sylvia's 20 year commitment to the community exudes dedication and leadership as she donates a large portion of her spare time to serving in an advisory capacity on a multitude of non-profit boards and organizations and a plethora of worthy causes that cater to inner-city youth. She serves on the Board of Directors for: The Support Group, True Star Media, The Chicago Elite Classic, The Chicago Debate Commission, and Student Science Fair Inc. to name a few.
As a native Chicagoan, Sylvia believes it is her responsibility to afford opportunities to youth that equip them with life skills, a sense of hope and belonging. How does Sylvia balance family, motherhood, work and philanthropy? For Sylvia, the answer is simple "passion".
